Woodworking in Flight

More Info...

Discover an age when aircraft parts grew on trees. Yes, some of the oldest and boldest planes in our collection were made with wooden structures! During this curated Experience led by the Museum's chief wood craftsman, you will examine some of these airplanes inside and out to see how organic materials and woodworking tools were used to make them incredibly strong and lightweight despite their sometimes fragile appearance. You will also view rare aviation artifacts not on public display, and enjoy a behind the scenes tour of the Museum’s Fabrication Woodshop—where we handcraft the exhibits of tomorrow!
